What is Christianity? (A not-so cliche view)

WHAT IS CHRISTIANITY?

A story that begins in Judaism, takes an unexpected turn, and still shapes the world today.

Christianity is a global faith centered on a person named Jesus, who lived around 2,000 years ago in the region we now call Israel. But this isn’t just a religion about being good or going to church. Christianity began because of a dramatic fracture within Judaism—when a group of Jewish people believed that something unexplainable had happened. And they were willing to risk everything for it.

IT BEGAN IN JUDAISM

Jesus was born into a Jewish family, followed Jewish traditions, and taught in synagogues. Christianity doesn’t replace Judaism—it grows out of it. In fact, Christians believe that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah that the Hebrew scriptures (the Tanakh) foretold. But this is where it gets complicated...

At the time, not everyone agreed. Some Jewish leaders rejected the claim and still do today. Without context on these claims, this is a radical and rejected view to Jews today, because their view sets them apart for God's special purpose, not assimilate religiously with the world who rejects their beliefs or forces them to compromise on a spiritual covenant they carry. However Jews 2,000 years ago, that believed Jesus was the Messiah, began following "The Way"—a name for the early Christian movement. This original movement is the heart of Christianity and pure. Over time, the two groups of Jews (Traditional vs. Messianic) grew apart. What we now call modern Judaism still waits for the Messiah. Christianity believes He has already come. Christianity has taken many different shapes since 2,000 years ago. History and leaders reshaped (or reformed) Christianity in many ways, so not all agree. This is where Christianity becomes "religious" through groups known as denominations. However, to be Christian, you don't have to be religious or follow a particular group's ideal. You just need to decide if you believe the events that happened 2000 years ago through private study and let it quietly shape your life.

THE WEIRD PARTS

The reason Christianity exists isn’t because Jesus had nice teachings. Lots of teachers have come and gone.

It’s because of what people said happened to Him.

Eyewitnesses—real people with jobs, families, and reputations—claimed to see Jesus heal the blind, calm storms, walk on water, and even raise people from the dead (dead for 4 or more days). And the craziest part? They said He Himself came back from the dead after being publicly executed.

That’s not just religious talk. That’s a recorded historical claim in ancient writings called the Gospels—some of which date to within living memory of the events.

What If It's True?

If you heard today that someone had been predicted in over 300 writings hundreds of years before they were born...And that this person showed up with unexplainable power, spoke of love and forgiveness, fulfilled ancient prophecies, and then—after a brutal public death—was seen again by over 500 people…

You’d probably be curious. You’d probably say,

“Wait. Is this real?”

Many people do.

Christians firmly believe that Jesus really lived, really died, and really came back to life. They believe He is more than a prophet. Jesus made a radical statement, that he was the Son of God, and also one with God. He also promised He was the only way to eternal life-- life after death. No prophet or teacher from other religions ever made this claim. Backed with the power and strange phenomenons of his life, Christians know the strange claim is very true. In fact, Christians believe He still lives today—not in memory, but in reality. Curious? Dive deeper into our lessons and teachings to find out how, why and how it could all be true. A healthy walk looking into all this is pretty neat.

MORE THAN A BELIEF

Christianity isn’t just about church buildings or moral rules. It’s about the idea that God stepped into human history—not to demand, but to rescue. To show people who He is, and to invite them back into relationship with Him.

Christians believe this same Jesus can heal, forgive, and transform lives even now. Many share stories of deep peace, personal phenomena of emotional, physical and spiritual healing, discovering a purpose, or miracles that defy modern explanation. These accounts are were the term "Born Again" comes from. Many people witness transformation (slow and encouraging) that feels like an awakening into life and joy.

For the Curious, Not the Convinced...

This post isn’t here to prove anything. But it is here to open the door.

Christianity began with people asking:

“Could this be true?”“Could God really come near?”“Could this one man really change the world?”

Maybe those are questions worth exploring today.

A MORE TRADITIONAL SUMMARY OF CHRISTIANITY

Christianity is a faith followed by over two billion people around the world. At its heart, it is centered on a person named Jesus, who lived in the region of modern-day Israel about 2,000 years ago. Christians believe that Jesus was not just a teacher or prophet—but someone sent by God with a message of love, truth, and hope for all people.

A RELATIONSHIP, NOT A RELIGION

Many Christians describe their faith not as a religion, but as a relationship—a personal connection with God through Jesus. They believe God is not distant or angry, but close, kind, and full of compassion. They believe He desires to walk with every person in their life journey.

WHO IS JESUS?

Christians firmly believe Jesus is the Son of God, and also one with God. According to historical accounts, He was born in humble surroundings, lived a life of kindness and healing, and taught people to love one another—even their enemies. He was executed by the Roman government, but Christians believe He rose from the dead three days later. This event, known as the resurrection, is the foundation of Christian hope.

WHAT DO CHRISTIANS BELIEVE?

Here are some of the core beliefs many Christians share:

  • God created all people with love and purpose.

  • Every person has value, no matter their past or present.

  • There is brokenness in the world—what Christians call "sin"—but God offers forgiveness.

  • Jesus gave His life to open the way to healing, peace, and eternal life.

  • There is life after death and this life is a shadow of what is coming; but it can only be received how Jesus described. No other way.

  • Faith is not earned through good behavior but received by trusting in God’s grace.

WHAT IS THE BIBLE?

The Bible is the sacred text Christians read for guidance, encouragement, and understanding. It includes historical writings, songs, letters, and stories. Christians believe it reveals God’s heart and truth, though interpretations can vary among different groups.

Why Do People Follow Christianity?

Many followers say they have found peace, purpose, and healing through Christianity. Others describe moments of deep transformation, answered prayers, or the experience of unconditional love. For many, faith in Jesus gives meaning to both suffering and joy.

Is Christianity Just One Thing?

No—there are many branches of Christianity, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions. While they have differences, they all share belief in Jesus as central to their faith.

RESPECTING OTHERS BELIEFS

This writing reflects what Christians believe, not what everyone must believe. We recognize that people come from many faiths, cultures, and questions. We invite each reader to explore gently and freely. The roots of Christian belief are found in history and ancient writings, which we encourage you to study for yourself.
