Matthew 5:3

THE FIRST BEATITUDE

The first line of the Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew 5:3. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." At first glance, this sounds like a paradox. How could poverty bring blessing? But Jesus was not only speaking about financial poverty. He was unveiling the first doorway into God's kingdom, humility in spirit. In Hebrew thought, the spirit, (ruach), represents the inner life, the breath of a person. To be poor in spirit means to stand before God fully aware of our need for Him. It is the spiritual posture of one who knows they bring nothing to the table but an open heart. In Greek, the word poor used here, (ptochos), describes someone completely destitute, dependent on another for survival. So Jesus is saying blessed are those who know they are spiritually bankrupt apart from God. This is the first key in the Sermon on the Mount, because the kingdom begins not with achievement, but surrender. Before one can be filled, they must be emptied. So reflection for today. To be poor in spirit is not self-pity, it is freedom from illusion. When we lay down pride and independence, heaven itself opens to us. The kingdom begins where we stop pretending we don't need God.
